Conspiracy Theories and Fake News Follow Flydubai Flight Incident

Within hours of the attempted security incident aboard a Flydubai flight bound for Israel, the unusual event spawned widespread misinformation across social media. False reports, unverified details, and antisemitic conspiracy theories circulated rapidly, often before factual details were confirmed.

Among the earliest falsehoods was a claim of a brawl between a Russian captain and a Ukrainian co-pilot. Major news outlets initially suggested this bizarre explanation, whereas the flight crew actually consisted of an Indian captain and an Oman co-pilot.

False Claims of an Israeli Operation

According to the antisemitism research center (ARC) of the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), accusations emerged within an hour alleging an Israeli "false flag" operation. Over a 12-hour monitoring window, researchers identified 2,963 posts attributing the incident to Israel, the Mossad, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Zionists, or Jews.

British Member of Parliament Ayoub Khan joined the conspiracy theories, posting on X that he was shocked by the speed of the investigation and hinting at Israeli fabrication.

The Weapon: Knife or Axe?

Initial reports in Israeli media stated that the co-pilot used a knife to stab the pilot, raising questions regarding airport security screening. It was soon clarified that an axe, rather than a knife, was used—specifically the emergency axe kept in the cockpit for safety crises.

Another deepfake video falsely claimed the attacker was an Indian citizen named Raghav Menon acting as a Mossad agent, which the BBC confirmed was completely fabricated using artificial intelligence.
