Israel is investigating a stabbing incident on a Flydubai flight amid Iranian threats against regional aviation, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the crew for thwarting a suspected disaster.
Israel is examining the stabbing incident on a Flydubai flight against the backdrop of recent threats made by senior Iranian officials regarding regional civil aviation. These threats follow U.S. measures restricting the operations of Iranian airlines.
Security Context and Iranian Threats
A senior Israeli official stated that in recent weeks, following the U.S. announcement against Iranian flights, Tehran officials warned that if Iranian planes cannot fly, regional aviation in other countries would also be targeted.
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned last week that if neighboring countries cooperate with the U.S., their airports would not be able to function. Mohammad Mokhber, advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader, stated that regional flights would be open to "everyone or no one."
"I salute the heroes on the flight, and I have instructed to prepare for additional potential threats," said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Prime Minister Netanyahu's Response
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the incident, describing the severe security event where a co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and attempted to crash the plane carrying mostly Israeli passengers.
"During the flight, as they approached Israel, one of the pilots stabbed the other and apparently tried to crash the plane," Netanyahu stated. Passengers and crew managed to break into the cockpit, neutralize the attacker, and stabilize the aircraft. The plane landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, and all passengers are out of danger.
While Israeli officials investigate the incident as a suspected terror attempt, authorities currently emphasize that there is no confirmed indication linking the co-pilot directly to Iran.
