Flydubai Co-Pilot Attack Thwarted by Captain and Passengers
Israeli passengers and the captain of a Flydubai flight thwarted an attempted crash after the co-pilot stabbed the captain mid-flight. The plane safely diverted to Saudi Arabia.
Cockpit Attack Thwarted on Flydubai Flight
An attempted crash of a Flydubai passenger flight was prevented when the captain and Israeli passengers overpowered a rogue co-pilot mid-flight. The incident unfolded on a flight heading toward Israel, which was ultimately diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The captain, identified as Smith Machatschar, sustained stab wounds during the violent struggle inside the cockpit after the Omani co-pilot attacked him and attempted to plunge the aircraft into a dive. Israeli passengers, alongside crew members, managed to break into the cockpit and neutralize the attacker using aviation headsets.
"We neutralized the terrorist, and a doctor helped the chief pilot and stabilized him. It was crazy," recounted one of the passengers involved in subduing the attacker.
Heroic Actions and Safe Landing at Ben Gurion
Following the intervention, another pilot from Fiji entered the cockpit and successfully regained control of the aircraft, which suffered tail damage during the rapid descent. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the harrowing event, praising the swift actions of those on board.
After hours of uncertainty, the Israeli passengers returned safely to Ben Gurion Airport aboard a replacement Flydubai flight that departed from Tabuk. Captain Machatschar, an experienced aviator with over 9,750 flight hours on Boeing 737 aircraft, was lauded in India and Israel for his bravery and quick thinking.
