In one of the most stunning upsets in League Cup history, fourth-tier Fleetwood Town eliminated Premier League champions Arsenal on Tuesday, securing a 3-5 victory in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after regular time.

Fleetwood, currently struggling in 18th place in League Two and just two points above the relegation zone, pulled off the remarkable feat against Mikel Arteta's side, which featured a rotated squad. The extraordinary evening began with an unusual interruption in the second minute when a drone hovered over the stadium, causing an eight-minute delay.

The deadlock was broken in the 21st minute when Aaron Lupale-Bi, on loan from Fulham, capitalized on defensive frailties, beat young Marley Salmon, and slotted the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Arsenal struggled to create chances in the first half and went into the break trailing.

Arteta responded by introducing Martin Odegaard and Ben White at halftime. In the 50th minute, Viktor Gyokeres equalized to make it 1-1 with his first goal of the season across all competitions, following good work by 18-year-old Kayden O'Neill on his Arsenal debut.

Arsenal dominated the remainder of regular time, but Kai Havertz repeatedly missed his chances, while Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch produced a stellar performance, including a crucial save against White in the 90th minute. The visitors' task became even harder in the 85th minute when 16-year-old Max Dowman was shown a straight red card following an altercation.

With no extra time played, the match went straight to penalties. Fleetwood displayed remarkable composure from the spot, converting their first four kicks through Coyle, Neal, Davies, and Cannon, while Odegaard, Havertz, and Gyokeres scored for Arsenal. Lynch saved Bruno Guimaraes' penalty, allowing Conor Haughey to step up and slot home the decisive fifth kick to seal a 3-5 triumph. Fans stormed the pitch as Arsenal suffered a humiliating exit against a side 84 places below them in the English football pyramid.
