FIFA Suspends Egypt Coach Hossam Hassan and Players After World Cup Chaos
FIFA suspended Egypt coach Hossam Hassan, manager Ibrahim Hassan, and player Moustafa Ziko following angry protests after their World Cup defeat to Argentina.

FIFA Sanctions Egypt After World Cup Exit
FIFA has imposed severe disciplinary sanctions on the Egypt national football team following the turbulent aftermath of their 3-2 defeat against Argentina in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. According to the ruling, head coach Hossam Hassan and team manager Ibrahim Hassan have been suspended for three matches each, while player Moustafa Ziko received a harsher five-match ban.
The match against the reigning world runners-up ended in painful fashion for the Egyptians, who squandered a two-goal lead and were eliminated following a dramatic comeback. However, the true storm erupted at the final whistle, as team officials and players expressed outrage over the officiating, alleging bias in favor of Argentina.
Impact on Upcoming Fixtures
The penalties are set to directly impact Egypt's upcoming international campaigns. Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan will miss next month's double-header against Malawi in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as well as the match against Angola in March 2027. Ziko, meanwhile, will be sidelined from international duty until June 2027, missing four AFCON qualifiers and another international fixture.
The disciplinary committee's decision stems from harsh post-match statements. Hossam Hassan claimed Argentina received preferential treatment due to commercial considerations and their world champion status. Moustafa Ziko went further, calling the tournament "rigged" and accusing referees of deliberately ruining the Egyptian people's efforts.
Egyptian FA Response
The Egyptian Football Association attempted to defend the trio, but FIFA's disciplinary committee upheld the suspensions. The EFA announced it is considering an appeal.
"The Egyptian Football Association has requested the full legal reasoning for the decisions to review the situation and prepare for appeal proceedings accordingly," the association stated.
The sanctions arrive shortly after the EFA extended Hossam Hassan's contract until the 2030 World Cup, meaning he must now begin the new campaign from the stands.
