Cruel exploitation of an 80-year-old: Serious indictment against caregiver

A shocking case has reached the judicial system: the prosecution is expected to file today (Sunday) a serious indictment and a request for detention until the end of proceedings against a 40-year-old foreign caregiver, an Indian citizen. She is suspected of a series of acts of abuse, sexual offenses, assault, and severe neglect against an 80-year-old woman in Tirat Carmel, while cruelly exploiting her physical and mental state.

The investigation began following a complaint filed by the elderly woman's family members, who suspected the caregiver was acting violently. Following the report, police officers from the Tirat Carmel station initiated a covert and in-depth investigation. The findings revealed a picture much more severe and broader than the initial suspicion, showing that throughout her employment, the suspect committed a series of serious offenses against the victim in her own home, where she was supposed to feel most protected.

With the transition to the overt phase of the investigation, police arrested the caregiver at the victim's home, seized her passport, and established a solid evidentiary basis that led to the repeated extension of her detention. At the end of the week, a prosecutor's statement was filed, and today the official indictment will be submitted. This incident raises once again deep anxiety for the well-being and safety of the elderly and the helpless, who are entrusted to caregivers behind closed doors.

The commander of the Tirat Carmel station, Superintendent Ofir Berkovich, emphasized the importance of family vigilance:

«This case illustrates the importance of reporting and vigilance on the part of family members. Thanks to the suspicion that arose and the professional investigation conducted at the station, serious crimes were uncovered that were apparently committed against a helpless person. Our message is clear: anyone who exploits the weakness of the helpless will meet a determined police force that will act with all tools to protect the victims and bring the suspects to justice.»
