European basketball stakeholders recently rejected a proposed partnership from the NBA, highlighting deep financial and structural disagreements. Reports from the United States reveal that valuation gaps and expansion plans were major hurdles in the aborted talks.

Valuation Gaps and Financial Disagreements

According to reports, the EuroLeague values its enterprise at a minimum of $3 billion for any future deal, whereas the NBA's proposal fell significantly short. Sources described the initial offer as far below expectations, with club owners feeling that the NBA failed to properly recognize years of heavy investment in European basketball brands.

The numbers simply did not make sense, and some owners felt the proposal carried a colonialistic tone regarding how it was presented in the boardroom.

Prominent clubs including Barcelona, Fenerbahce, and Olympiacos were among those opposing the current terms. However, insiders view the rejection not as a definitive end, but rather as an opening salvo for more serious negotiations.

Expansion Plans and Future Markets

A core point of contention involves the EuroLeague's expansion strategy. The current competition features 20 teams, with plans to scale up to 24. The NBA sought to halt this expansion, partly because several targeted markets overlap with its own international ambitions.

Meanwhile, Italian club Napoli reportedly secured a conditional approval in August to join the EuroLeague pending a final decision within 90 days, while also working on a new arena project. The NBA has indicated it will continue pursuing its NBA Europe project independently if no agreement is reached with the EuroLeague.
