Fatal mistake at the barbershop: suspect attempted to kill his uncle but shot the barber
The murder of Yasser Abu al-Hija in Tamra has been solved. Investigations reveal a 17-year-old was sent by his father to assassinate his uncle, but the teenager mistakenly shot the barber instead.
The Central Unit of the Northern District announced on Monday the resolution of the murder of Yasser Abu al-Hija, a 34-year-old barber who was killed at his workplace in Tamra last July. The indictment, to be filed this morning, reveals a case of a "family liquidation" gone wrong, resulting in the death of an innocent bystander.
The incident occurred on July 7, around 13:00. According to the investigation, an assassin on an electric bicycle arrived at the barbershop on Tamra's main street, drew a pistol, and opened fire on those inside.
The shooting struck two people: Abu al-Hija, who was cutting hair, and a 39-year-old client who was seriously wounded. The barber was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Investigators initially focused on both victims but soon realized the intended target was the client in the barber chair. The motive stemmed from an internal family dispute.
Ten days later, investigators located the electric bicycle, helmet, and clothing used by the killer, which had been hidden in a container. Following the transition to an open investigation, three relatives of the target were arrested: a 17-year-old nephew (the alleged shooter), the target's brother and father of the minor (48), who helped plan the hit, and another 19-year-old nephew who conducted reconnaissance and assisted in the escape.
Incriminating evidence on the phone
Key evidence against the minor defendant was discovered on his mobile phone. Investigators found a photo of the teenager holding two pistols, which strengthened the case regarding his role in the fatal shooting.
Northern District Commander, Nitzav Meir Eliyahu, addressed the case:
"Solving murder cases and preventing serious crime are our top priorities. We invest our best resources and technological means to reach every crime scene and crack every case. We will continue to act with full force to ensure that everyone involved in serious crime is put behind bars."
The Haifa District Attorney's Office will file the indictment against the three suspects this morning at the District Court, along with a request for their detention until the end of the proceedings.
