Erdogan Denounces Gender Neutrality Policies and Defends Crackdown at UN
Turkish President Erdogan condemned global gender neutrality policies at the UN General Assembly while defending a massive domestic crackdown against the LGBTQ community.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched a scathing attack on global gender neutrality policies during his address at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. Speaking to world leaders at UN headquarters in New York, Erdogan claimed that such policies constitute a siege directed against innocent children and the institution of the family.
"We will succeed in breaking this siege only by defending the family composed of a woman and a man," Erdogan stated, addressing the assembly. His remarks come in the wake of a sweeping crackdown launched by Turkish authorities against the country's LGBTQ community, which has resulted in the arrest of 82 individuals and the detention of 100 protesters.
The operation, codenamed "My Family is Safe," began early last Wednesday with coordinated police raids across major cities including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Aydin, and Mersin. Justice Minister Yasar Guler announced via social media that investigations were initiated against 162 suspects, nine non-governmental organizations, and 13 commercial establishments, including gay bars and a traditional bathhouse.
Crackdown on Civil Society and Activism
Authorities targeted current and former activists from prominent organizations advocating for LGBTQ rights and HIV awareness. Websites and social media accounts belonging to these groups were blocked as part of the government's broader initiative. Turkish prosecutors claimed to have seized drugs, digital equipment, smuggled alcohol, and firearms during the raids, alleging that minors were improperly influenced regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.
The Human Rights Association in Turkey vehemently condemned the raids, characterizing them as a politically motivated operation designed to enforce a uniform family model and purge civil society under the guise of protecting children. Critics and analysts suggest that Erdogan's Justice and Development Party is intensifying its rhetoric against the LGBTQ community to consolidate support among its conservative base.
Criticism of Israel and Regional Stance
Turning to regional geopolitics, Erdogan used his UN platform to criticize Israel over its military campaign in Gaza. While condemning the ongoing conflict, his rhetoric was comparatively subdued relative to previous years, when he drew direct parallels between Israeli leadership and historical figures. He urged nations to increase diplomatic pressure to end the war and called for broader international recognition of a Palestinian state.
"Anyone with humanity, compassion, and a sense of justice cannot close their eyes to what is happening in Gaza," Erdogan declared, describing the humanitarian situation in severe terms. Following his remarks regarding the Palestinian territories, members of the Israeli delegation walked out of the General Assembly hall in protest.
