Erdogan Expands Role of Senior Official in Syria

The Turkish ambassador to Syria added the title "Special Representative of the Foreign Minister for Syrian Affairs" to his official social media profiles yesterday (Sunday), alongside his existing role as ambassador in Damascus. According to Arab media, this step indicates an expansion of his mandate, moving beyond traditional diplomatic representation to include the oversight of political, security, and military files.

The addition of this title is particularly significant given the ambassador's background. The new role may grant him broader authority to monitor sensitive issues, coordinate positions between various Turkish institutions, and convey political developments and field updates from Syria directly to decision-makers in Ankara.

This move comes as Turkey continues to strengthen its political and military footprint in Syria—a presence that Israel is actively working to prevent. Earlier this month, the Israeli Air Force struck a Turkish military installation in northwestern Syria, which Defense Minister Israel Katz described as a "dangerous adventure." It appears that while Erdogan is distancing himself from the battlefield, he remains committed to intervening in the management of Syrian affairs.
