Elon Musk has warned about the future of the United States economy amid a continuous rise in the national debt. During an appearance on the Dwarkesh Podcast, Musk stated that the US is heading toward bankruptcy and state failure unless it successfully addresses the growing debt burden through artificial intelligence technology.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence

"We are 1,000% going to go bankrupt as a country and fail as a country, without AI and robots," Musk said, emphasizing that a major productivity breakthrough driven by AI and robotics is the primary solution to the crisis. Musk argued that without such a transformation, nothing else will resolve the national debt, warning of potential financial collapse.

According to US Treasury Department data, the national debt currently stands at approximately $40.17 trillion and continues to swell as federal expenditures outpace revenues. During the first nine months of the 2026 fiscal year, the federal deficit reached roughly $1.37 trillion. Meanwhile, interest payments on the debt have surpassed the $1.0 trillion threshold, exceeding the US defense budget.

Rising Defense Expenditures

Compounding these fiscal challenges are growing defense expenditures. According to the Pentagon, the US spent approximately $37.5 billion on the war in Iran by mid-year. Future defense budgets are also expected to weigh heavily on the national debt. Under President Donald Trump's proposed 2027 budget, defense spending could reach $1.5 trillion, marking the largest annual increase since the end of World War II.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) estimates that the plan will add about $5.8 trillion to the national debt over the coming decade when factoring in interest payments. A potential US economic collapse would carry severe implications far beyond its borders, given the central role of the dollar in global finance, international trade, and capital markets worldwide.
