Elon Musk and Shivon Zilis Split After Five Years Together
Elon Musk and Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis have ended their five-year relationship. Legal experts note that since they were never married, Zilis is not entitled to a massive spousal settlement.
Elon Musk and Shivon Zilis, a top executive at Neuralink and the mother of four of his children, have ended their relationship after roughly five years. Zilis recently revealed the split, which reportedly came without advance warning from Musk.
Following the news, internet users worldwide quickly assumed that breaking up with the world's richest man would net Zilis a massive financial settlement worth hundreds of millions of dollars. However, expectations of a huge payout turned out to be premature, as the legal reality is quite different.
Legal Standing and Child Support Rules
The main reason Zilis will not receive a lump-sum payout lies in their official relationship status: the two were never married. Without marriage, the law does not recognize a right to property division or spousal support, meaning Musk is not legally obligated to pay a separation grant.
In Texas, where the legal proceedings are centered, there is no automatic right to separation payouts for unmarried partners unless a formal pre-existing contract was signed. Without such a document, the law treats Musk and Zilis as completely independent individuals.
The only legal obligation is child support for their four children, capped by law and strictly dedicated to their upbringing. Zilis, an accomplished tech executive, maintains her own substantial career and wealth independent of Musk.
