Elon Musk has returned to a formal advisory role within the administration of US President Donald Trump, this time focusing on national security and defense technology.

Project Meridian and Pentagon Initiative

On September 30, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth announced the establishment of "Project Meridian," a major initiative designed to evaluate the future of warfare and identify the advanced capabilities required by the United States military. Musk will serve as co-director of the project, alongside Palmer Luckey, founder of defense technology firm Anduril, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The team is tasked with assessing future battlefield dynamics, pinpointing critical capability gaps, and accelerating the development and deployment of next-generation defense systems. Recommendations are scheduled to be submitted to the secretary by January 28, 2027, followed by a public report and a classified annex. Hegseth presented the initiative as a vital effort to harness the expertise of leading entrepreneurs and technology pioneers for America's strategic defense needs.

Conflicts of Interest and Industry Scrutiny

Alongside high expectations for rapid modernization, the Guardian and other outlets highlighted potential conflicts of interest, given that the commercial entities owned by Musk and Luckey hold lucrative government defense contracts. The research organization MITRE, appointed to lead the administrative and operational aspects of the project, stated that its work will rely on professional and objective analysis, integrating experts from industry, academia, and policy sectors. Other notable participants include Safra Catz and Joe Lonsdale.

"Project Meridian will leverage cutting-edge innovation and rigorous analysis to ensure our armed forces maintain absolute technological superiority on the battlefield of tomorrow."

Background and Reconciliation

Musk's previous tenure in the administration concluded in May 2025 following his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a stint marked by intense policy debates and public friction with President Donald Trump over federal spending legislation. Following a temporary rift, the two figures have since reconciled. Musk attended a high-profile White House meeting with Trump and artificial intelligence industry leaders on September 29, just one day prior to the formal announcement of his new defense advisory role.
