Lost her children in an accident – and returned to give birth where her life was saved

There are stories where the healthcare system's role does not end in the trauma unit or the operating room. Sometimes, the bond between a patient and medical staff lasts for many years, accompanying them through both the darkest times and moments of hope. The story of Shirley Lipnik is one such journey.

The tragedy that changed her life

About eight years ago, Shirley was critically injured in a fatal car accident that claimed the lives of her two children, 12-year-old Ori and 8-year-old Roi, of blessed memory. She was evacuated to the Meir Medical Center (Clalit Group) in critical condition, where she was sedated and intubated. Hospital teams fought tirelessly for her life in the intensive care and pulmonary units.

While grappling with their profound loss, Shirley and her husband, Ohad, who was also injured, made the extraordinary decision to donate their children's organs, saving the lives of others. Since then, the family has dedicated themselves to honoring the memory of Ori and Roi.

Closing the circle at the hospital

Last week, a significant circle closed for the family. Shirley returned to Meir Medical Center—not as a patient fighting for survival, but as a mother-to-be. This marked her third birth at the hospital since the accident. Given her medical history and the emotional complexity of the pregnancy, Shirley was supported throughout the journey by Dr. Sivan Perldansky, a specialist in high-risk obstetrics and director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Unit at Meir, alongside a dedicated midwifery team.

Throughout the pregnancy, there were moments when the fears and memories returned, especially while my husband was on reserve duty, but from the first moment, I felt that I was not going through this journey alone." — Shirley Lipnik.
