Rabid Dog Found in Eli After Biting Minors Sparks Urgent Health Search

Infected Dog and First Exposure Cases

A rabid dog was discovered in the community of Eli after being spotted wandering for days through the Plgei Mayim and Neve Shoham neighborhoods. The dog was captured after minors came into contact with it, subsequently testing positive for the disease. Thirteen dogs were ordered to receive booster vaccinations, and authorities continue to trace additional potential exposures and contacts.

The dog in question was periodically sighted in the area starting September 1, approaching both humans and other dogs. It was captured on September 5 at 21:30, and a FAT test conducted at the Kimron Veterinary Institute confirmed it was positive for rabies. An alert containing a photograph of the dog was distributed to residents via the community secretariat to identify any potential contacts. Dr. Hovav Shapiro, the council veterinarian, is managing the concerning incident.

Medical Treatment for Victims

It was further reported that a minor who was bitten on the hand received treatment at Meir Medical Center, and another minor who was scratched through clothing was referred for further evaluation at the Ramla Health Bureau. Concurrently, authorities are investigating suspected contact between the rabid dog and several other dogs, including potential saliva exposure even in cases where no bites or wounds were observed.

Since the beginning of the year, approximately 100 confirmed cases have been recorded nationwide, a figure indicating a worrying spread from the northern regions into Gush Dan, Sharon, and Samaria. Just last month, a dog was reported confirmed with rabies after biting a woman in Ramat Gan.

Current morbidity scales and geographic distribution break patterns from previous years:

1. In the past, almost all rabies cases concentrated in northern regions and near borders.

2. This year demonstrates a widespread leakage of the virus into central districts.

3. The infection figures approach negative records seen across previous turbulent periods.

Ettinger urges residents not to approach stray animals or animals exhibiting unusual behavior, and to report them to competent authorities. In case of a bite, scratch, or potential saliva exposure from a suspicious animal, individuals must immediately seek medical guidance.
