Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar! party, visited the Re'im shelter known as the "death shelter" alongside Shira and Moshe Shapira, parents of Aner Shapira. During the visit, Eisenkot reflected on the fallen hostages and the exceptional heroism displayed on October 7.

Remembering Heroism at Re'im

Aner Shapira was killed at the shelter near Kibbutz Re'im after throwing back grenades to protect dozens of civilians who sought refuge during the Hamas assault. Eisenkot praised his actions as a supreme example of leadership and personal responsibility.

"No one appointed him to be the commander of this shelter. He took responsibility, exposed himself to protect twenty-six others, and threw back grenades until the very last one."

Leadership and Accountability

Eisenkot drew a direct parallel between Aner's selfless actions and the broader concept of national leadership, emphasizing the necessity of taking responsibility and setting a personal example during times of crisis. The visit underscored the enduring grief and the ongoing national debate surrounding the fate of the hostages held in the Gaza Strip.
