Eilat Driver Indicted After High-Speed Chase, School Rooftop Standoff
An Eilat resident was indicted after a dramatic police chase involving traffic violations, trespassing on a school roof, and severe threats against officers.
A routine police patrol in Eilat turned into a high-stakes pursuit after officers spotted a driver committing multiple traffic violations in rapid succession. When ordered to pull over, the suspect accelerated in an attempt to evade the police vehicle, triggering a chase that ended abruptly when he crashed into another car near a traffic island.
The driver, identified as 31-year-old Eilat resident Andrey Vilshtein, immediately abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot. Scaling a fence, he broke into the courtyard of a local school in an attempt to throw off his pursuers. Following an extensive search, an officer located Vilshtein hiding on the roof of the school building. Additional police units arrived at the scene, repeatedly calling on him to surrender, but he refused.
Rooftop Arrest and Threats
The officer who led the foot chase climbed onto the roof, formally notified Vilshtein that he was under arrest, and brought him down. While waiting by the locked school gate for a security guard to open it, Vilshtein launched into a tirade of verbal abuse and severe threats against one of the officers.
"I will fuck you! I will stab you, I will deal with you and burn your children," Vilshtein threatened while attempting to break free and obstruct the officers from transferring him into custody.
Criminal Background and Indictment
A subsequent police investigation revealed that Vilshtein's criminal record regarding traffic offenses is extensive. Investigators discovered that he has never held a valid driver's license, possesses no vehicle insurance, and was currently driving under multiple active judicial disqualifications from obtaining a license.
Following the completion of the investigation, Chief Inspector Rotem Levi of the Eilat Police Prosecution Department filed a formal indictment against Vilshtein at the Eilat Magistrates' Court. The charges encompass a severe array of offenses committed in under an hour, including threats, criminal trespassing, obstruction of a police officer, driving without a license or insurance, driving while disqualified, and reckless driving.
"The defendant, who has never obtained a driver's license, repeatedly drove despite two judicial disqualifications. He attempted to evade police by car and on foot, and subsequently threatened to harm an officer and his family members," stated Chief Inspector Levi, emphasizing the clear danger he poses to public safety and his blatant disregard for the legal system.
