An artificial intelligence-generated Egyptian version of the popular animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants" has emerged in recent weeks as a major online phenomenon in Egypt, presenting a significant headache for the administration of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, according to a report published Tuesday by the BBC.
The trend began within a Facebook group named "Complaints of Al-Hamour Bottom Residents," an Egyptian localized version of Bikini Bottom, which quickly amassed roughly 1.8 million followers within weeks. Utilizing characters from the series alongside AI-generated imagery, users flooded the platform with sharp commentary on the pressing hardships facing the Egyptian public: soaring costs of living, steep rental prices, corruption, and the deteriorating state of healthcare and educational services.
Satire Targeting the Administration
Among the prominent viral memes, President el-Sisi was depicted as Mr. Krabs, the notoriously money-obsessed restaurant owner from the show. Other widely shared images portrayed the ocean floor crowded with Cairo's ubiquitous auto-rickshaws, commonly known as tuk-tuks, accompanying biting critiques regarding street harassment and the performance of government ministers.
The massive popularity of the online group rapidly drew the scrutiny of state authorities. Following reports of an official investigation, the group was suspended, and numerous politically sensitive posts were subsequently removed.
