EEOC Sues Ohio Hospital Chain Over Antisemitic Firing

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed a federal lawsuit against Mercy Health in Youngstown, Ohio, and its parent company, Bon Secours Mercy Health, alleging severe workplace discrimination. The lawsuit follows the termination of Dr. Ian Walton, an accomplished Jewish surgeon who was fired shortly after the October 7, 2003 massacre without a valid professional justification.

According to the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Dr. Walton had consistently exceeded performance expectations since joining the hospital network in 2015. However, his Jewish faith, known among the staff, allegedly made him a constant target for antisemitic harassment. Colleagues reportedly blamed him personally for actions taken by the State of Israel and accused him of fostering global conflicts.

"Following years of antisemitic harassment, and shortly after the Hamas attack on October 7, the plaintiff was subjected to a barrage of workplace comments blaming 'the Jews' for the attack," said EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas.

Escalation Following October 7

The hostile work environment intensified dramatically in the wake of the October 7 Hamas terror attacks. Court documents state that hospital employees confronted Dr. Walton with criticism regarding military actions in the Gaza Strip, explicitly telling him that the massacres committed by Hamas were "the fault of the Jews."

Concurrently, hospital management began professional marginalization. Dr. Walton was excluded from critical scheduling meetings and faced arbitrary reductions in his operating room allocation despite his stellar track record. On November 1, 2023, he was abruptly terminated with management citing reasons "unrelated to job performance." Dr. Walton currently practices at the Cleveland Clinic.

Federal Enforcement and Hospital Response

The EEOC is seeking permanent injunctions to bar Mercy Health from engaging in religious discrimination, mandating equal opportunity compliance programs, and securing back pay and compensatory damages for Dr. Walton. Representatives for Mercy Health declined to discuss pending litigation, emphasizing their Catholic mission and welcoming stance toward individuals of all faiths.
