Ed Sheeran is paying a heavy personal and emotional price following the storm over the dismissal of rapper Macklemore from his tour due to pro-Palestinian statements.
His weekend performance at Lincoln Financial Field turned into an unprecedented drama when the 35-year-old singer sat on the floor, wept in front of tens of thousands of spectators, and shared the social isolation he found himself in after all the opening acts and his backing band withdrew in solidarity with the rapper.
On stage, Sheeran opened his heart to the audience and shared sharp remarks: "In situations like this, you really find out who your friends are. It has been a weird week. It happened very quickly. At the same time, so many people told me to cancel this tour, and so many people I have known for years and years are simply walking away from me."
Reflecting on the feeling that everyone is turning their back, he added: "I saw the ticket sales for this show and I didn't see cancellations, I saw people buying tickets. But everyone tells me to cancel, and I feel like all my friends, my family, and the people I know are abandoning me."
Regarding his decision to take the stage despite the hardest week of his life and his fear of boos, he said: "I look at the weekend and see 50,000 people who didn't abandon me. People will say what they want, but I am doing this for you. I love you."
Addressing security fears and changes to the show, Sheeran admitted: "The world is a scary place right now, America is a scary place right now. I apologize that today is not a normal show. I took out B-stage because I was afraid of what might happen if I stood in the middle. And I admit that."
Alongside the storm on stage, family pressure received public validation when his cousin, Jethro Sheeran, harshly attacked him on social media, calling him a "selfish person" and claiming he was ashamed of his actions.
