Israeli Startup DreaMed Diabetes Wins FDA Approval for MODI App
Israeli startup DreaMed Diabetes has secured FDA approval for MODI, a mobile app providing personalized insulin dosage recommendations for type 2 diabetes patients using injections.
The Israeli startup DreaMed Diabetes has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for MODI, an application that analyzes blood sugar levels and insulin treatment data, providing type 2 diabetes patients with personalized dosage recommendations directly to their mobile devices.
Advancing Type 2 Diabetes Care
Approximately 85% of insulin users are treated via injections, representing more than eight million people in the United States alone. Many of these patients fail to reach recommended blood sugar levels, and months often pass between doctor visits to adjust insulin dosages. While advanced insulin-dosing technologies have been primarily developed for type 1 diabetes patients using pumps, options for injection users have remained limited. The prescription-only app analyzes sugar patterns and treatment data without requiring prior physician setup or individual approval for every single recommendation.
Memorializing October 7 Victims
The application is named after the late Mordechai (Modi) Amir, a 67-year-old technology expert from Kfar Aza who was killed on October 7. The connection between the Amir family and DreaMed was formed as part of the Next October memorial initiative, established by Yizhar, Hila, and Ophir Shai in memory of their son and brother Yaron, who fell in battle defending Kerem Shalom on October 7. With the family's consent, the company chose to memorialize Modi through the app, which was registered under this name with the FDA.
"Today we can monitor blood sugar continuously, but insulin treatment is still updated sometimes only once every few months. Information alone does not improve patient health; value is created when it is turned into a timely personal recommendation," said Eran Atlas, co-founder and CEO of DreaMed Diabetes.
DreaMed was established in 2014 from technological activity at the Jesse Z. and Sara Lea Shafer Institute for Endocrinology and Diabetes at Schneider Children's Medical Center. Based in Kfar Saba, the company employs 30 people and has raised a total of $35.5 million since its inception.
