A violent incident that began during the filming of a report on antisemitism in Northern Ireland has ended in an arrest: local police have arrested a man in his 30s suspected of attacking i24NEWS correspondent Yonatan Roe and cameraman Nadav Abes in Belfast. The suspect faces a series of charges, while the investigation into the circumstances of the incident and the motive for the attack continues.
The attack took place over the weekend, while Roe and Abes were in Northern Ireland filming a documentary series dealing with waves of antisemitism in Europe. The two arrived at a well-known bar complex in Belfast and were interviewing passersby, but at a certain point, a local man noticed that it was an Israeli television crew and began interfering with the filming.
According to the report, the man first tried to snatch the filming equipment from their hands. After failing, he continued to disrupt the recording and made obscene gestures in front of the camera. Following the behavior at the scene, the crew decided to stop filming and try to move away from the area, but the incident did not end there.
Roe and Abes tried to de-escalate the situation and retreat, but the suspect followed them in a threatening manner. The two turned to security personnel at nearby bars and requested assistance. Then, according to the description of the incident, the suspect grabbed a large glass beer mug and threw it with force from close range at Abes. The glass hit the cameraman in the head and caused a bleeding cut.
Despite the difficult scenes, the two managed to leave the place safely and did not require further medical treatment afterward. Since then, they have already completed their mission in Northern Ireland and returned to Israel.
Now comes a significant development in the case. According to the report, police in Northern Ireland have arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of involvement in the attack. Among the suspicions attributed to him are assault causing bodily harm, assault, assaulting a police officer, and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. The case is expected to be passed to the Public Prosecution Service in Northern Ireland for review.
