The entire United States was seemingly in shock when Dolly Parton passed away following a battle with cancer. Now, it turns out that Parton hid her severe illness not only from the public, but from large parts of her family as well. Her sister, Stella Parton, shared this in an emotional interview on CBS Mornings.

Keeping the Secret to Protect Others

"Dolly didn't want anyone to tell it, because Dolly couldn't bear negative things," her grieving sister said during the interview. "She wouldn't have wanted her fans to worry about it." According to Stella, the same logic applied to the family: she didn't want many of her relatives to worry. "Some of us knew, those who were closer, but not every family member."

When the interviewer asked why all this secrecy was necessary, Stella returned to the same point: she didn't want people to be sad. However, she noted that Parton would have been happy to see the massive wave of love that followed her passing. "She would have been really happy and joyful that people showed her so much love, because she knew it would make us, as her family, feel better."

Final Weeks and Legacy

In an interview with PEOPLE on August 21, just days before her death, Parton mentioned she was dealing with several health issues that she hadn't paid attention to while caring for Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years, who passed away in 2025 at the age of 82. She also said that social media and the 24/7 news world amplify the focus on her medical condition.

"You know me... I still have so many things I want to achieve, so I'll keep working as long as I can to see everything come to life."

Parton's representatives confirmed after her passing that she died following a brief battle with cancer. A few days later, in accordance with her wishes, Parton was laid to rest in a private funeral ceremony in Nashville, at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum.
