Deni Avdija recently appeared on Draymond Green's podcast, reflecting on his journey in the NBA, his growth into an All-Star, and representing Israel on the international stage.

From Washington to Portland: Overcoming Early Struggles

Avdija opened up about his difficult entry into the league during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drafted late at night while surrounded by family, he arrived in Washington D.C., which felt like a ghost town. With empty hotels, masked arenas, and no traditional rookie experiences, it was the toughest start imaginable for an international player.

The Turning Point Under Chauncey Billups

Things changed drastically after his trade to Portland, where head coach Chauncey Billups gave him a simple yet empowering piece of advice: "You're a great rebounder. Whenever you grab a rebound, push the ball forward." That trust snowballed into confidence, leading to a breakout season where he averaged stellar numbers, cemented his status as an All-Star, and scored a career-high 43 points against New Orleans.

Representing Israel on the Global Stage

Speaking about what it means to represent Israel as an All-Star, Avdija noted the unique bond he shares with fans back home. "In Israel, the whole country watches every single game of mine since I was 18 or 19. They wake up at three or four in the morning. They saw me struggle, miss ten shots in a row, and sit on the bench. And now they see me overcome every obstacle and become an All-Star. It's an incredible journey, and I feel like I play with an entire nation behind me."
