Danger on the plate: About half a ton of meat unfit for consumption seized and destroyed in Tamra

During a joint enforcement operation held recently in the city of Tamra, a butcher shop was exposed holding an exceptional quantity of about 500 kilograms of meat unfit for human consumption.

The operation was carried out by inspectors of the Northern District of the Pitsuach unit at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in cooperation with Tamra police officers and representatives of the Tax Authority from the Income Tax department. During the proactive inspection at the business, it turned out that the meat was held without any veterinary documentation as required by law, and from an unknown source - a fact indicating a lack of supervision over the supply chain.

According to professional sources, this is animal produce that did not undergo necessary sanitary inspections, and therefore was defined as dangerous to public health. Following the findings, an authorized veterinarian ordered the immediate destruction of all the meat, in accordance with procedures and the veterinary order.

At the same time, the owner of the butcher shop was summoned for questioning under caution at the enforcement unit, and further legal proceedings are expected to be opened against him.

Moshe Arak, director of the Pitsuach unit, stated that the unit's inspectors work around the clock to ensure that food of animal origin reaching the public is safe for consumption. According to him, selling meat without veterinary supervision constitutes a serious offense that could directly endanger the health of consumers.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security emphasized that animal produce not under supervision is unfit for consumption, and called on the public to purchase meat, poultry, fish, and eggs only from authorized points of sale. The ministry noted that they will continue to act together with the police using all means to prevent the distribution of dangerous food and to maintain food security in Israel.
