Customs inspectors at Ben Gurion Airport intercepted an unusual attempt to smuggle around 300 prohibited banana and staghorn fern seedlings from Thailand. The passenger, a physician from central Israel, claimed the plants were meant for his private garden.

The seized plants were immediately confiscated by inspectors from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the physician for violating the Plant Protection Law.

Authorities emphasized that importing plant material without supervision can introduce foreign pests and diseases, posing a severe threat to Israel's agricultural sector and local banana crops.
