Corruption in Israeli football: suspicion of match-fixing, three suspects arrested
A covert investigation by Lahav 433 led to the arrest of three former players suspected of operating an organized betting mechanism and fixing matches in the women's Premier League in exchange for financial gain.
A new corruption scandal is shaking Israeli sports this Thursday morning. The National Unit for Economic Crimes (YALEK) within Lahav 433, through the bribery and sports betting division, has uncovered a suspected organized and systematic betting mechanism in Israeli football. As part of the case, police arrested and brought in for questioning at the YALEK offices three suspects—two men and a woman, all former players in various leagues.
The investigation, which was conducted covertly over the last few months in cooperation with the Israel Football Association, raised serious suspicions of match-fixing in the women's football Premier League. According to investigators, the three operated the fixing and betting mechanism with the aim of directly influencing match results and generating illegal financial profits from bribes and betting payments.
Police note that now that the investigation has moved to the overt stage, they are thoroughly examining the full scope of the activity, the identities of other individuals involved, the methods used to carry out the fixes on the field, and the amount of money exchanged as part of this mechanism.
The Israel Police stated: "The Israel Police will continue to act decisively against corruption, match-fixing, and illegal betting, which could harm the integrity of sports and public trust."
