How much will it cost me in 'Trumps'? The historic move in the United States gets underway

The US Mint is launching a gold-colored one-dollar coin in honor of the 250th anniversary of the USA, bearing the president's image. The coin will serve as legal tender for all purposes. The move was made possible despite regulations stating that only deceased individuals are permitted to appear on coins.

A coin instead of a bill, and of course in gold color: The official institution responsible for the production and issuance of United States coinage (US Mint) has begun selling gold-colored coins worth 1 dollar, bearing the image of President Donald Trump. The sale will begin at 12:00 Eastern Time (19:00 Israel time), with the price of a single coin ranging from approximately 1.55 dollars to 2.44 dollars, depending on the address and the quantity purchased.

The coins, which were first announced in July, are intended to mark the 250th year since the founding of the United States. On the front side of the coin appears Trump's face, alongside the inscriptions "Liberty", "In God We Trust", and the years "1776-2026". On the back side of the coin is stamped the presidential seal, showing an eagle holding an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, alongside the number "250" to mark 250 years of the oldest democracy in the world.

The existing law — and the "loophole"

According to regulations in the United States, only people who have passed away are permitted to appear on coins. However, the Trump administration clarified that the president can appear on the coin by virtue of a 2020 law that permits new designs to mark the country's 250th anniversary celebrations. The US Mint noted at the time of the announcement that it would be possible to use the new coins for any payment transaction, but at the same time marketed them as a unique collector's item. The Mint further stated that the coins "combine a daily currency with a once-in-a-generation historical design".

Despite the luxurious appearance, the coins do not contain real gold but are made primarily of copper, alongside 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel. The consumer price is determined by quantity: a roll of 25 coins is sold for 61 dollars, while a bag of 100 coins costs 154.50 dollars. In addition, the official institution responsible for the production and issuance of the country's coins has randomly included 250,000 special coins bearing the "July 4th" hallmark inside the packages offered for sale on its website.
