Pro-Palestinian Protest Held Outside Columbia University Gates in New York
A pro-Palestinian demonstration outside Columbia University in New York broke months of quiet, occurring alongside memorial events for October 7 and campus dialogue initiatives.
A small pro-Palestinian demonstration was held on Wednesday outside the gates of Columbia University in New York, organized by Students for Justice. The rally, involving about 50 participants with covered faces, broke months of relative quiet on campus.
Rallies and Campus Tensions
Protesters chanted slogans including "Free Palestine" and "There is only one solution, intifada revolution." Police maintained a presence outside the gates to prevent violence, as campus rules prohibit demonstrations within the university grounds itself.
The demonstration occurred concurrently with events marking the anniversary of the October 7 attacks, including memorial exhibits by Jewish and Israeli student organizations. Columbia University's new dean, Jennifer Manokin, who assumed office in July 2026, visited the exhibits and participated in informal "Listening Tables" dialogue circles.
Ongoing University Measures
"The First Amendment protects freedom of speech, not freedom from consequence," noted campus observers following the demonstration.
Columbia University has experienced significant unrest since the outbreak of the war in Gaza. While recent months saw a decrease in major disruptions, symbols of support and minor gatherings have continued to reflect ongoing polarization among students and faculty.
