Clippers Spark Controversy by Reassigning Chris Paul's Iconic No. 3 Jersey

The Los Angeles Clippers have ignited a fresh wave of controversy this summer, drawing heavy criticism after putting Bradley Beal jerseys on sale with the number 3—the iconic digit worn exclusively by franchise legend Chris Paul since 2011.

Bradley Beal Returns to His Preferred Number

Beal wore number 3 throughout his stints in Washington and Phoenix, but switched to number 0 last season upon joining the Clippers while Paul was still on the roster. Following Paul's turbulent departure last season, which proved to be his final campaign in the NBA, Beal is now set to reclaim his signature number.

Paul spent seven of his 21 NBA seasons with the Clippers, from 2011 to 2017 and again in 2026, establishing himself as the franchise's all-time assists leader. Many fans assumed the number 3 would be kept out of circulation until the club eventually retired it to the rafters. Notably, the Clippers remain the only organization in the NBA that has not yet retired a single jersey number.

Fan Backlash and Beal's Response

The move did not sit well with a vocal segment of Clippers supporters. Addressing the backlash on social media, Beal defended the legend, writing:

"He is a legend! You can't touch his history and brand, and you can't erase them."

Beal recently re-signed with the Clippers this summer on a two-year deal worth more than $13 million, opting out of his previous contract after a hamstring injury limited him to just six games last season.

CBS Sports harshly criticized the organization, writing: "Given how Paul's attempted 'farewell tour' ended last season, this move feels like another unnecessary jab at one of the club's greatest icons with zero practical benefit."
