Cliff Booth Returns: David Fincher Directs Sequel and Tarantino Pens Novel
Cliff Booth is returning in a David Fincher-directed Netflix sequel and a new Quentin Tarantino novel, continuing the story of the beloved stuntman in 1977 Hollywood.
Cliff Booth, the veteran stuntman memorably played by Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is returning to the screen. Pitt won an Oscar for the role, and the character is now coming back in a sequel titled The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, directed by David Fincher for Netflix. But that is not all for fans of the Quentin Tarantino universe.
According to recent reports, Tarantino is also writing a literary spin-off titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth. This is not Tarantino's first foray into novelization; in 2021, he published a novel based on the original film. The new book is scheduled for release on December 8 by HarperCollins, bridging the gap between the film's IMAX theatrical release on November 25 and its Netflix premiere on December 23.
Hollywood in 1977 and Plot Details
Both the book and the movie are set in Hollywood in 1977, eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The original film followed an aging actor and his loyal stunt double trying to find their footing in a changing industry against the backdrop of late-1960s Los Angeles and the Manson family murders.
The wild 1960s are long behind us, but Cliff Booth is still around—a war hero, stuntman, bartender, projectionist, and occasionally someone who provides covert services for his friends.
Massive Production and High Expectations
Released in 2019, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood grossed over 400 million dollars worldwide and earned ten Oscar nominations, including Pitt's supporting actor win. The upcoming sequel boasts a massive production budget of around 200 million dollars, with Tarantino stepping back from the director's chair to write the script while Fincher takes over directing duties.
