China and the United States have reached an agreement on mutual tariff reductions totaling 30 billion dollars, alongside the establishment of a dialogue on artificial intelligence, following an eight-point pact finalized during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Washington.
The announcement was issued by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs shortly after Xi landed in Beijing following a three-day visit to the United States. According to Beijing, Xi and Donald Trump agreed to build constructive relations of strategic stability based on mutual respect, fairness, and reciprocity.
Tariff Reductions and Trade Framework
At the core of the agreement is a mutual tariff reduction scheme amounting to 30 billion dollars, applicable to non-sensitive goods from both sides. US tariff cuts will apply to agricultural products, seafood, and medical devices, while Chinese concessions will cover items such as toys and small home appliances.
The parties also confirmed the creation of a joint trade council and the extension of outcomes achieved in previous trade talks in Kuala Lumpur. This follows an earlier decision to extend the commercial truce between the two superpowers, which was originally set to expire on November 10.
Artificial Intelligence and Global Security
One of the most notable clauses involves establishing a dedicated dialogue channel—referred to as a super-intelligence channel—where both sides will exchange views on the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence technology. The first round of discussions is scheduled for November.
In the broader foreign policy arena, the leaders agreed that Iran must uphold its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, with the White House taking a firmer stance that Tehran must never possess nuclear arms. Furthermore, both nations agreed that no tolls should be imposed on international waterways, and reinforced law enforcement cooperation against drug trafficking.
