A British refinery worker has won a three-year legal battle against a parking enforcement company using ChatGPT to draft his defense. Raphael Goral, 45, from Essex, was hit with a 100 GBP fine in August 2023 after experiencing mobile connectivity issues while trying to pay for parking in Newquay.

The Battle Against Parking Fines

Goral appealed the penalty issued by Smart Parking, explaining that poor signal delayed his payment. However, the company ignored the appeal and passed the case to debt collection agencies, causing the penalty to escalate to nearly 300 GBP amid persistent legal threats.

This was a David versus Goliath battle. They have lawyers and are a large company, but in the end, they simply gave up.

Instead of paying, Goral scanned every threatening letter and fed it into ChatGPT. The AI analyzed the legal arguments, guided his responses, and drafted formal defense documents for the court proceedings scheduled for October 2026.

Victory Through Artificial Intelligence

Faced with a robust AI-assisted defense, the parking company attempted to settle for 60 GBP, but Goral refused. Shortly before the court date, the company dropped all charges and closed the case entirely. Goral's successful use of generative AI highlights a growing trend of individuals leveraging technology to challenge corporate penalties.
