Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek has revealed that since his abrupt ouster in November 2022, he has not set foot in a single one of the entertainment giant's theme parks. In a candid interview with Bloomberg, Chapek admitted that he is simply not in the right emotional space to visit these locations, explaining that it would be agonizingly difficult to reconcile the visitor experience with what he witnessed behind the scenes. He also described the profound sense of erasure left by the company's management, noting, "It's as if I never existed."

A Bitter Departure After Three Decades

Chapek, who began his career at Disney back in 1993, argues that his termination was entirely unjustified. He adds that even if the board decided to sever ties, it should have been handled "with class, dignity, and respect" after three decades of dedicated service—treatment he feels he was utterly denied. His career within the firm was largely built on successfully managing Disney's parks division, culminating in his appointment as CEO in February 2020, succeeding Bob Iger. However, on November 20, 2022, the board shockingly ousted him and reinstated Iger. Since then, Chapek claims the company has actively worked to scrub away his memory.

"It is as if I never existed. Not only did they crush me, but they continue to hurt me even now," Chapek shared, detailing how his name was removed from a plaque at Castaway Cay and omitted from Disney's official corporate history.

Systematic Erasure and Uninvitation

As examples of this systematic erasure, Chapek points out that management removed his nameplate from a plaque on Castaway Cay, the private island of Disney Cruise Line—a move he calls unprecedented. Furthermore, his name was completely excised from the official corporate history, which he described as the final straw. He recounts with deep pain that the company not only crushed him professionally but continues to inflict wounds. Disney's treatment extended to high-profile corporate galas: Chapek was entirely omitted from the guest list for Disney's 100th-anniversary celebrations, an event he planned from conception to completion. Similarly, his name was absent from the decade milestone of Shanghai Disney Resort—a project he claims might not even be open today had he not been asked to step in and save it during its troubled development.

The Roots of the Rift

Chapek traces the beginning of the fracture between himself and his predecessor back to his very first month as CEO, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of Disney's theme parks and businesses. During those uncertain early days, Iger gave an interview to The New York Times announcing he was stepping back in to guide the company—all without discussing it with Chapek beforehand. The day after the interview, Chapek told Iger directly, "You signed my death warrant." The two men have not spoken since Chapek left the company, and Chapek makes it clear he does not expect any reconciliation, especially given that, as far as Disney is concerned, he simply does not exist.
