Disaster in Hungary: 12 dead and about 10 injured in tourist bus rollover

A tourist bus from Poland overturned on Sunday while driving on a highway near the town of Mezőkeresztes in eastern Hungary. According to reports from the scene, 12 people were killed and ten were injured.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Medgyessy addressed the accident on his X social media account, writing that "the bus veered off the road and rolled into a ditch." He added: "I thank everyone who took part in the rescue efforts."

According to a statement by the local police, the bus was on its way to the city of Nyíregyháza and carried 57 passengers and two drivers. An initial investigation suggests that the driver fell asleep during the trip and lost control of the vehicle. The police announced that the bus driver has been arrested.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki said: "It is with deep sorrow that I received the news of the tragic accident in Hungary, in which so many of our compatriots died." In photos from the scene, the bus can be seen lying on its side in a ditch, with its windows shattered and suitcases and other equipment scattered beside it.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also addressed the accident on his X social media account. He called the accident "tragic" and said: "The consular service is working, we are in contact with the Hungarian authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide verified information and open a hotline regarding the accident."
