Washington Family Rescues Pet Cat Accidentally Thrown Away in Old Sofa
Washington reporter Neal Augenstein and his family successfully rescued their pet cat, Mike, after accidentally throwing him away inside an old sofa destined for a waste shredder.
A Washington family experienced moments of pure terror after realizing they had accidentally thrown away their pet cat, Mike, along with an old sofa. News reporter Neal Augenstein and his family only noticed the eight-year-old cat was missing after the waste disposal trucks had already departed, sparking a frantic chase to the main waste transfer station.
A High-Altitude Rescue
At the transfer station, alert workers spotted Mike perched terrified on a narrow ledge about 4.6 meters (15 feet) high. The site's deputy manager noted that the cat was trapped with no safe way to jump down, while heavy equipment operators prepared for the rescue.
Within ten minutes, the team managed to carefully lower Mike using the bucket of a mechanical loader. However, the drama was not over: the frightened cat bolted from the workers and hid in a storage room until animal control officers arrived to safely capture him and return him to his family.
A Miracle Escape from the Shredder
Augenstein shared that Mike returned home smelling slightly of garbage but safe and happy.
Neal Augenstein expressed his deep gratitude to the workers:
"When things are thrown here, they are shredded and sent immediately to the landfill. This was so close to becoming a tragedy, and we are celebrating an incredibly happy ending."
