IDF Carmeli Brigade Reservists Face Sudden Personnel Cuts Before Syria Deployment
Carmeli Brigade reservists training for the Syrian border face sudden personnel cuts days before deployment, increasing the operational burden on remaining troops.
A reservist force from the Carmeli Brigade is currently training for an extended operational deployment of approximately 110 days along the southern sector of the Syrian border. Ahead of the deployment, some 600 reservists reported for pre-deployment training last week. According to battalion soldiers, just 24 hours before heading to the front lines, a directive was issued to downsize the personnel quota.
Downsizing Amid Heavy Missions
Dozens of soldiers who reported for duty were informed that their reserve orders were being canceled and that they were being sent home, while others were required to shoulder the same operational burden with fewer troops. A commander in one of the brigade's battalions expressed frustration over the abrupt decision, noting that the battalion is currently executing its seventh tour since the outbreak of the war.
"When there are fewer shoulders under the stretcher, the burden falls on fewer people. The scope of missions remains identical because the sector hasn't changed, but I simply have fewer soldiers," the commander said.
Operational Pressures on the Border
Troops noted that the Syrian border sector can escalate rapidly despite its perceived relative calm. Commanders criticized the timing of the decision, coming right after soldiers arranged their civilian lives, jobs, and families to report for duty. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) response to the incident is still pending.
