A police officer was injured on Sunday evening in an exchange of gunfire outside the B'nai Yaakov Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, approximately 180 km from Toronto, as congregants gathered for Yom Kippur services.
According to police reports, at around 19:10, an officer encountered a 29-year-old armed individual whose identity has not been released. In the ensuing shootout, both the officer and the suspect were wounded, with the officer sustaining serious injuries and the suspect suffering critical wounds. Approximately 20 worshippers were inside the building at the time; none were physically harmed, though bullets struck a synagogue window.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the attack, stating: "On the holiest night of the Jewish calendar, a shooting occurred outside the B'nai Yaakov Synagogue in Belleville. Jewish communities must be able to practice their faith in complete security and live their lives with pride and freedom."
