Female mayors and regional council heads from across the country gathered this week, wearing pink shirts to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The initiative was led by Ganei Tikva Mayor Lizi Delricha with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of screenings and early detection.

The meeting was attended by numerous local leaders, including Galit Shaul (Emek Hefer), Rotem Yadlin (Gezer), Hila Ben HaRosh (Kochav Yair-Tzur Yigal), Dafna Rabinovich (Shoham), Shlomit Sihur Reichman (Emek Yizrael), Michal Uziyahu (Eshkol), Or Piron-Zomer (Oranit), Oshrat Gani Gonen (Darom HaSharon), and Mira Ben Ari (Gan Raveh).

Cancer Statistics and Municipal Cooperation

According to estimates by the Israel Cancer Association, approximately 5,870 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in Israel during 2026, averaging about 113 women per week. Detecting the disease at an early stage increases the cure rate to approximately 90%.

During the gathering, the female leaders discussed potential collaborations among municipalities to promote women's health awareness and make information accessible to female residents. Leveraging their direct contact with thousands of residents, the mayors sought to harness municipal tools and public spaces to encourage women to undergo routine monitoring and avoid delaying medical examinations.

"As women in key positions who are entrusted with the care of our residents, it is important for us to utilize this platform to promote women's health awareness," Delricha noted. "Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to remind every woman not to delay examinations and to take care of her health."

Waze Campaign with Adi Ashkenazi

As part of a campaign running in Israel in collaboration with the "One in Nine" association and simultaneously in the United States, Waze is integrating special navigation messages throughout October to encourage women to get tested. The initiative features custom messages and audio prompts voiced by Israeli comedian Adi Ashkenazi, utilizing her recognizable style and humor to reach drivers during their daily commutes.

In addition to audio cues, users worldwide will see a special opening screen dedicated to breast cancer awareness, highlighting the most common cancer among women in Israel. To facilitate access to medical services, thousands of locations in the United States and approximately 400 breast surgery clinics and mammography centers in Israel have been mapped within the application.

"Waze accompanies people through major parts of their daily routine, and in those spaces, we have the privilege to convey an important message," stated Waze CEO Guy Berkowitz. "Our connection with 'One in Nine' and Adi Ashkenazi allows us to use the driving experience to remind women in an accessible way not to postpone their checkups."
