A powerful explosion rocked a military base in the city of Viacha in western Bolivia overnight, causing dozens of casualties. According to local health authorities, between 10 and 15 people were killed, and 58 others were injured, including six military personnel and 52 civilians.
The blast occurred at a military warehouse inside the base. Bolivian Defense Minister Ernesto Justiniano Orenda stated that preliminary reports of fatalities had been received, but clarified that the official death toll would not be released until verification is complete.
The Defense Minister stated:
"The authorities have ordered the area to be closed and isolated, and have allocated all necessary resources to treat the injured."
Search and rescue teams are currently operating at the scene while providing assistance to the victims. At this stage, the cause of the explosion remains unclear. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident as work at the site continues.
