Crowds and Tensions at Bnei Brak Population Authority Over Walk-In ID Issuance
Severe crowding and tensions occurred at the Bnei Brak Population and Immigration Authority branch as citizens rushed to obtain ID cards without prior appointments ahead of elections.
Severe crowding was reported today at the Population and Immigration Authority branch in Bnei Brak, as large crowds arrived following a new directive allowing citizens to obtain an identity card without scheduling an appointment in advance.
The long lines and heavy congestion led to friction between waiting citizens and security guards, with tensions almost escalating into physical confrontations at one point.
The situation stems from a joint initiative by the Population and Immigration Authority and the Central Election Committee, aimed at enabling eligible voters who lack a proper identification document to secure an ID card ahead of upcoming elections.
Under the arrangement agreed upon by the authority and election officials, citizens can visit population administration bureaus nationwide during operating hours to apply for a new identity card without a prior appointment. However, authorities emphasized that walk-ins are strictly intended for individuals lacking any valid identification required to exercise their right to vote. It was also clarified that voting is permitted using an expired identity card.
