The world-famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa in Iceland is preparing for an initial public offering on Nasdaq Iceland as early as November, carrying an exceptional business risk: an active volcano.

Shareholders approved the move on Friday, according to company announcements. The lagoon, renowned for its warm turquoise waters and surrounding volcanic landscapes, has become a symbol of Iceland's tourism industry. However, the location that drove its global appeal also poses its greatest threat, as the site sits on the Reykjanes Peninsula, a region plagued by recurring volcanic eruptions in recent years.

The company previously planned an IPO in 2022, but seismic activity repeatedly disrupted those efforts. The site has faced periodic closures, and protective earthen barriers have been constructed around the facilities to deflect lava flows.

Despite these operational challenges, financial results indicate a significant recovery. Group revenue for 2025 reached approximately 156 million euros, marking a 36 percent increase compared to the previous year. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization rose to 29.4 million euros, up from 9.6 million euros in 2024. Alongside the geothermal spa, the group operates luxury hotels, restaurants, and a skincare product division.

Simultaneously, shareholders approved a stock option plan for roughly 700 permanent employees, allowing them to acquire shares worth up to approximately 61,600 dollars per employee over a five-year period, pending tax authority approval.

The target valuation for the offering has not yet been disclosed. For investors, the core question remains not only tourist turnout, but how to price a business where nature can halt operations at any moment.
