BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, is expanding its crypto product lineup by filing a prospectus with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a new exchange-traded fund, the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, to be traded under the ticker PBIT.

Investment Strategy and Buffer Mechanism

Unlike direct spot bitcoin ETFs, the planned fund will utilize an options-based strategy. The core mechanism, known as a buffer strategy, is designed to provide partial downside protection against asset price drops while capping potential upside gains. The fund will not hold bitcoin directly; instead, its assets will consist of call options derived from BlackRock's spot ETF, IBIT, alongside cash, short-term U.S. government bonds, and investment-grade corporate securities.

According to the prospectus, PBIT will use FLEX options to adjust expiration dates and strike prices, dividing the portfolio into three overlapping tranches that renew monthly. The buffer mechanism aims to protect against the first 10% of losses under conditions set at the start of the strategy period, though it does not provide absolute protection against all potential downturns.

Regulatory Review and Market Expansion

The application is currently under review by the SEC, and exact management fees, the listing exchange, and final profit caps have not yet been finalized. If approved, PBIT will offer investors a structured approach to managing volatility in the digital asset market, balancing risk reduction with a trade-off on maximum potential returns.
