Bitcoin and Gold Post Weakest Returns Among Major Assets in 2026
Bitcoin and gold are recording the weakest returns among major asset classes in 2026, dropping 7.3% and 7.5% respectively, marking a historic low for both safe havens.

Bitcoin and gold, widely viewed by investors as a hedge against inflation and currency depreciation, are posting the weakest returns among major asset classes this year. According to market strategist Charlie Bilello, Bitcoin has dropped 7.3% since the beginning of 2026, while gold has declined by 7.5% as of October 23.
Bilello noted that this marks the first time since tracking began in 2011 that both assets rank together at the bottom of the annual performance table. This development is particularly striking given that both instruments are considered alternatives to traditional financial assets, despite their distinct characteristics.
Gold's weakness stands out against its performance last year, when prices surged by 63.7%. Following such a sharp rally, this year's losses likely reflect profit-taking, underscoring that even traditional safe-haven assets are not immune to significant price fluctuations.
For Bitcoin, volatility remains an inherent trait. Despite the year-to-date losses, the digital currency maintains one of the highest historical returns, boasting an average annual compound return of approximately 120.6% since 2011 and leading asset rankings in 11 of the past 15 years.
