An Irish pub in Berlin named The Lir, which broadcasted a soccer match between Israel and the Republic of Ireland resulting in a 3:0 defeat for the Israeli team, issued an extraordinary apology expressing "deep regret" for airing the game instead of boycotting it.
In a statement posted on social media, the pub stated: "We would like to sincerely apologize for our decision to screen yesterday's match between Israel and the Republic of Ireland at The Lir." The owners explained that while they initially believed sports and politics should remain separate, they realized the broadcast caused genuine hurt and disappointment.
"We want to make our position clear: We stand with Palestine and oppose the genocide carried out by Israel," the pub owners wrote, while also apologizing to a staff member who was placed in a difficult position.
Future Boycott Declared
The owners concluded by apologizing to the Berlin Irish community and pledging that the next match between Israel and Ireland, scheduled for October 4, will be boycotted, with all profits donated to Palestinian aid. Despite the strong statement, it was later removed from social media and is no longer publicly available.
