More than 24,000 residents around the world ranked their cities by quality of nightlife, prices, sense of community, safety, and variety. The result is surprising: the European party capital is not in first place, New York settles for third, and one Asian city leaves them all behind.
If it seemed that in an era of rising prices, young people drinking less, and long-standing clubs closing, urban nightlife is starting to fade, a new ranking proves exactly the opposite. It has simply changed. Instead of an evening that starts and ends in one club, more cities today offer a mix of small bars, street parties, rooftops, music spaces, restaurants that operate until the small hours, and places where the boundary between a bar, a club, and a cultural center has almost disappeared.
The Time Out ranking of the world's best cities for nightlife for 2026 is based on the responses of more than 24,000 residents, who were asked to rank, among other things, the quality of leisure in the city, prices, sense of security, variety, friendliness, and the ability to meet people. After weighting the data, a vote by the magazine's editors and experts in culture and nightlife was added. To maintain geographical diversity, only the city that received the highest score in each country entered the list.
So where is it best to plan your next night out on vacation? These are the ten cities that reached the top.
- Bangkok, Thailand — the city that doesn't really sleep
Bangkok takes first place thanks to a mix that is hard to find elsewhere: tiny street bars alongside huge clubs, LGBT parties, sophisticated cocktail bars, and rooftop bars with a 360-degree view. The Thonglor and Silom neighborhoods stand out in particular, but part of the charm is found precisely in places where the entertainment naturally spills from the bar onto the sidewalk.
Food is also an inseparable part of the night — from chef meals to pad krapow on a plastic stool at two in the morning. 73% of residents rated the city's nightlife as good or excellent, and the expert panel gave Bangkok an approval rating of 95%.
- Berlin, Germany — even when clubs struggle, the city continues to dance
Berlin may be dealing with rising rent, real estate projects, and the closure of long-standing night institutions, but its reputation has not disappeared. On the contrary, the local party scene is becoming more decentralized, underground, and flexible.
Alongside institutions like Berghain and Tresor, there are wandering collectives, pop-up parties, and events whose location is sometimes revealed only hours before opening. The city's techno culture, recognized in 2024 as part of the intangible cultural heritage in Germany, continues to be a central force. 78% of Berliners rated the city's nightlife positively, and all members of the expert panel supported it.
- New York, USA — very expensive, never boring
New York may be going to sleep a little earlier than before, but it is still capable of providing almost any type of entertainment imaginable. Parties under bridges, huge clubs, dance evenings that end at 10:00 PM, community wine bars, and events in neighborhoods off the beaten tourist path.
82% of New Yorkers defined the city's nightlife as good or excellent — one of the highest scores in the ranking. The big disadvantage is clear: the price. Only 40% think that a night out in the city is financially accessible. On the other hand, New York received particularly high scores for excitement, variety, and vitality.
- Melbourne, Australia — an evening where you choose the adventure
Melbourne's great advantage is that there is no single formula for a successful evening. You can start at a neighborhood pub with live music, move on to a cocktail bar, continue to a club with an invested sound system, or choose a drag, comedy, or trivia night.
The city's skyline also enters the night atmosphere: the Melbourne Star wheel is spinning again with colorful LED lighting, adding another prominent point of light to the urban landscape after dark.
77% of residents rated the local nightlife as good or excellent. When asked what the city excels at in particular, informal pubs and bars led the way, followed by cocktail bars. For travelers who prefer to diversify and not dedicate the whole night to one club, this is one of the most interesting options on the list.
- Sao Paulo, Brazil — the party goes to the roof
The largest metropolis in Latin America is rediscovering its historical buildings — precisely after dark. In recent years, more and more rooftop bars and clubs have opened in the city, with panoramic views, DJs, vinyl music, and cocktails.
74% of locals gave the city's nightlife a high score, and 71% noted that even going out for a drink is still considered relatively affordable. The community figure is particularly prominent: 72% of residents said it is easy to meet people and feel a sense of belonging in the city — a significant advantage even for travelers who arrive alone.
- Medellin, Colombia — reggaeton until the small hours
In a city associated with names like J Balvin, Maluma, and Karol G, the soundtrack is almost expected: reggaeton rules. The Laureles and El Poblado neighborhoods are still the main entertainment hubs, although within El Poblado the center of gravity has shifted in recent years from the Parque Lleras area to Provenza and Manila.
Alongside the clubs, small and intimate bars, hidden bars, and bars focused on listening to music have also opened. Medellin received the highest score among locals for the quality of nightlife — 87%. It was also ranked as one of the cheapest cities on the list, and 71% of residents chose clubs as the most prominent night attraction in the city.
- Johannesburg, South Africa — from rave to cocktail bar
Johannesburg's nightlife has always known how to reinvent itself. Today you can hear in the city, sometimes even on the same evening, deep house, techno, afro-house, gqom, drum and bass, and experimental music.
The Newtown area continues to be an important hub of clubs and music scene, while Melville and Rosebank offer a slightly more relaxed pace, with cocktail bars, live performances, and neighborhood places. Sandton also takes on a different character after dark: the illuminated skyscrapers, hotels, restaurants, and bars create a more polished urban atmosphere, which presents a modern and glamorous side of Johannesburg at night.
The city also stands out in prices and is considered one of the cheapest in the top ten. 80% of residents said it is easy to find a community and make connections there — one of the highest figures in the entire ranking.
- Brighton, UK — relatively small, but very alive
The city on the south coast of England continues to hold its status as one of the most important centers of LGBT nightlife in the UK. Alongside long-standing clubs, there are particularly creative lines operating there — from feminist paint parties to evenings inspired by fantasy worlds.
For those who prefer a more traditional evening, Brighton also has plenty of pubs and bars. But the most impressive figure is the human connection: 84% of residents said it is easy to meet people in the city — the highest score on the list. 83% rated the quality of nightlife as good or excellent.
- Beijing, China — you have to know where to look
Beijing does not always reveal its nightlife immediately. Sanlitun is still a popular starting area for the evening, but some of the most interesting places are actually in the hutong alleys, in small beer bars, and in underground spaces.
The techno scene is expanding, and alongside it, unconventional events are appearing — from daytime raves to house parties in churches, parks, and even hot pot restaurants. Beijing is also the cheapest city on the list for nightlife, according to locals, with a score of 77% in the price category. 80% noted that it is easy to make social connections there.
- Amsterdam, Netherlands — less of a tourist party, more of a city for locals
Amsterdam closes the top ten with an interesting change in the nature of its entertainment. The old image of a party city concentrated in the tourist heart is giving way to a scene that is scattered between the north of the city, the east, De Pijp, and the Jordaan.
Amsterdam North has become one of the most intriguing night hubs in the city, with clubs operating in industrial spaces and warehouses, entertainment venues on the waterfront, and spaces that combine music, art, and nightlife. Bars focused on listening to music and cocktail bars are also gaining popularity. 77% of residents said it is easy to find a sense of community in Amsterdam, and pubs and clubs received an identical number of votes as the preferred night attractions in the city.
Conclusion: nightlife has not disappeared — it has just left the club
The top ten of 2026 shows that the term "nightlife" is no longer summed up by a line for a club at midnight. The cities that succeed today are precisely those that offer several types of evening simultaneously — street and food, music and cocktails, community and parties, large clubs, and tiny places that only the locals know.
And in this sense, the big surprise of the ranking is not that Bangkok beat Berlin or New York. It is that the most sought-after cities after dark are those where the night feels less like a product for tourists — and more like a natural continuation of the city itself.
