Berlin Mayoral-Elect Faces Coalition Crisis Over Leaked Hamas Fears
Berlin mayoral-elect Elif Erlap faces a political crisis after leaked emails revealed she fears Hamas-linked activists, complicating her coalition talks.

Berlin mayoral-elect Elif Erlap is facing intense political fallout after an accidental email leak to the German magazine Der Spiegel revealed she feared Hamas-linked activists. Erlap, who won the September 20 Berlin election representing the leftist Die Linke party, mistakenly attached internal notes to a transcript review.
Accidental Leak Exposes Fear of Extremists
The controversy began when Erlap’s office returned edited interview transcripts to Der Spiegel, mistakenly including internal communications. In the leaked notes, Erlap expressed panic over being questioned about Ibrahim Ibrahim, a pro-Palestinian activist tied to Hamas who attended her party's election night celebration. "My husband and I do not want to mention certain names," Erlap wrote, adding, "He is afraid of these people, and so am I."
Erlap further noted that she had previously received advice from the Berlin criminal investigation department regarding organized crime not to name specific individuals. "Now it involves people with ties to Hamas," she wrote. "I cannot endanger myself and my family for Der Spiegel. What do we do now? Cancel the entire interview?"
Coalition Talks and Political Backlash
Stefan Evers of the CDU, who finished second in the election, warned that Erlap's remarks highlight a dangerous contradiction within her party, which advocates for reducing police numbers. Evers called on potential coalition partners in the Green Party and the Social Democrats to pull the emergency brake. Former Berlin Mayor Michael Müller also warned that Erlap could be vulnerable to blackmail.
Ibrahim, through his attorneys, denied being a member of Die Linke and rejected accusations of supporting terrorism, stating he opposes anti-Semitism. Erlap declined to address the leaked messages directly, citing the publication of private information, but insisted on Thursday that she remains committed to becoming mayor, promising to ensure the security of all Berlin residents.
