Ben Gvir Rejects Police Commissioner's Request for New Strategic Advisor Rank
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir rejected the Police Commissioner's request to create a new high-ranking strategic advisor position, citing potential command conflicts and unnecessary public spending.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has rejected a request from the Police Commissioner to establish an additional Deputy Commander (Tat-Nitzav) rank for a strategic advisor position within the commissioner's office. The commissioner nominated his assistant, Commander Erez Tamir, who previously served as a regional deputy commander.
Weeks ago, the commissioner sought ministerial approval for the new rank, arguing that a strategic advisor is essential for his bureau. However, Ben Gvir refused the request, citing that an extra senior rank is unnecessary and could lead to duplication with existing police district commanders and senior officers.
In his response letter, Ben Gvir stated that strategic advising constitutes the core function of the police's Planning and Organization Directorate, headed by a Major General (Nitzav). He questioned the operational hierarchy, asking what would happen if the strategic advisor disagreed with senior commanders and where ultimate authority would lie.
According to the minister, granting a high rank to a political or strategic advisor risks creating unnecessary friction and jurisdictional conflicts within the police general staff. Sources close to Ben Gvir maintained that his decision is strictly professional and aimed at preventing the creation of redundant senior positions that burden taxpayers.
Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner reiterated his position that he and the general staff retain the operational right to advance internal appointments, including that of a strategic advisor in the commissioner's bureau.
