A family from Kibbutz Be'eri survived the October 7 massacre after taking shelter in their sukkah and a nearby palm tree, witnessing what they call a miracle when the sukkah remained untouched despite their home burning to the ground.

Escape from Be'eri

On the morning of October 7, terrorists infiltrated Kibbutz Be'eri and attacked the home of the Shabi family. Itay Shabi held the safe room door shut for an hour to protect his family while terrorists attempted to break in and eventually set the house on fire. As thick smoke filled the room, Itay managed to open the safe room window, helping his wife Moran and their twins escape into the yard amidst extreme danger.

The sukkah, which was built just days before the holiday from palm branches, remained completely intact right beside the charred ruins of the house.

The Palm Tree and Rescue

Seeking cover, the family hid beneath the wide branches of a small palm tree in their yard—the very tree Itay had trimmed to build the sukkah. They later fled to a nearby thicket, where Itay constructed an improvised shelter of branches and leaves. After hours of hiding, Itay spotted two red lights in the dark and heard Hebrew voices. An IDF rescue force soon arrived and evacuated the family to safety.

Months later, when the family returned to inspect the remains of their home, they discovered that the fire had miraculously stopped right at the entrance of the sukkah. For the Shabi family, the surviving structure stands as a powerful testament to their survival during one of Israel's darkest days.
