BBC Middle East Bureau Chief Sues Herzliya Landlord Over 75,000 NIS Guarantee
The BBC Middle East bureau chief and his wife filed a 75,000 NIS lawsuit against their Herzliya Pituach landlord, claiming unauthorized cashing of a bank guarantee and unresolved property defects.

The BBC bureau chief for the Middle East and his wife have filed a 75,000 NIS lawsuit against the landlord of their rented villa in Herzliya Pituach. Filed through attorney Avi Zaiderman, the lawsuit names the BBC as the corporate guarantor that provided a bank guarantee for the lease agreement, which ran from 2022 to 2026 with monthly rent ranging between 21,000 and 22,000 NIS.
According to the statement of claim, the property suffered from persistent defects throughout the tenancy, including water leaks, flooding, mold, and electrical short circuits. The plaintiffs assert that despite repeated real-time notifications, the landlord failed to adequately repair the defects to ensure habitable conditions. The suit notes that upon moving in, the windows and curtains were dirty, requiring the tenants to launder the curtains themselves.
The plaintiffs state that during discussions regarding a potential lease extension, the landlord raised no claims regarding property damage or required repairs. On July 13, 2026, upon returning the keys, the landlord allegedly raised no objections regarding the property's condition. However, less than 24 hours later, on July 14, 2026, contractors entered the villa to begin renovations before notifying the tenants of any alleged defects or giving them an opportunity to inspect the premises.
Furthermore, the lawsuit alleges that on July 13, 2026, the landlord submitted a demand to the bank to cash the 66,000 NIS bank guarantee without prior written notice to the tenants. On July 16, 2026, the couple received an email detailing the alleged damages. The plaintiffs are seeking the full return of the 66,000 NIS guarantee and 9,000 NIS in compensation for emotional distress. A statement of defense has not yet been filed.
